Great Britain’s squad for Berlin is the biggest sent to a major championships in the modern era.

Laura Muir, Charlotte Purdue and Alex Yee are among the British team of 102 athletes set for the European Championships in Berlin next month, which take place from August 6-12.

Double world indoor medallist Muir was initially selected for both the women’s 800m and 1500m events in Berlin but having suffered irritation to her Achilles following the Anniversary Games, she took the decision on Monday night to focus on the 1500m only.

Exciting young talent, Yee, who was crowned as the British 10,000m champion in May, will compete in his first major championships after making his GB debut at the European Cup, which was incorporated into the Highgate Harriers’ Night of 10,000m PBs.

The international triathlete is joined in the men’s selection by the experienced pair of Andy Vernon and Chris Thompson. Aldershot’s Thompson is also entered into the 5000m along with Ben Connor and Matt Scott.

Charlotte Arter, who also won British 10,000m gold in May, is joined by US-based Alice Wright for 25 laps in Berlin.

Guy Learmonth’s PB performance at the Anniversary Games is rewarded with selection in the 800m along with Elliot Giles and British debutant Daniel Rowden.

Six athletes were chosen for the women’s marathon back in April however Aly Dixon has unfortunately had to withdraw through injury, however, the five strong team of Charlotte Purdue, Lily Partridge, Sonia Samuels, Caryl Jones and Tracy Barlow will be confident of strong performances.

Dina Asher-Smith is also among seven individual medallists from the last European Championships in Amsterdam in 2016 named in the squad including fellow defending champion Martyn Rooney, silver medallist Jazmin Sawyers and bronze medallists Elliot Giles, Chris Baker, Anyika Onuora and Steph Twell.

Onuora and Eilidh Doyle will make history in Berlin as they prepare to make a record-equalling fifth appearance for the British team at a European Championships while for the first time ever at a major championships there are more women (56) selected than men (46).

Great Britain are the defending champions in the men’s 4x100m and women’s 4x400m relays, silver medallists in the women’s 4x100m and bronze medallists in the men’s 4x400m and will field experienced squads in Berlin.

CJ Ujah, Adam Gemili and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake helped Britain to world 4x100m relay gold last summer while Asha Philip and Daryll Neita join Asher-Smith in Germany having claimed global 4x100m silver in London.

Both 4x400m squads include all medallists from the finals of the World Championships in 2017 – Hudson-Smith, Rooney, Dwayne Cowan and Rabah Yousif and Doyle, Laviai Nielsen, Emily Diamond and Zoey Clark.

The allowable size of each relay squad has been relaxed for all nations due to timetable clashes with up to eight additional relay-only athletes permitted. In events where a reigning European champion has accepted their place, up to four athletes can be selected.

British Athletics Performance Director Neil Black said: “I am delighted to confirm the 102 athletes chosen to compete for Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the European Championships in Berlin next month. The standard of performances from British athletes since the Commonwealth Games in April has been extremely high and therefore competition for places to Berlin has been more competitive than ever. This is a huge opportunity for athletes to demonstrate form ahead of two global championship summers.

“It is fantastic that for the first time ever more women than men have been selected and this underlines further that athletics is a truly equal sport while I would like to congratulate both Anyika and Eilidh on what will be their fifth appearance for the British team at the European Championships.

“The team is our largest for over 100 years and we look forward to watching them thrive under the spotlight of a major championships. These European Championships are an important marker on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and we expect to be competing for medals at every turn.”

Finally, this year’s event marks the first time that seven sports have joined their respective European Championships into one multi-sport event with the athletics programme taking place in Berlin, and the sports of swimming, cycling, rowing, triathlon, golf and gymnastics being hosted in Glasgow.
