To start the week Lindie Naughton brings us all the Irish endurance action and news from the weekend just gone (Monday 6th May).
Mathew Kiplimo Kemboi of Kenya was the winner of the Belfast Marathon on Sunday (May 5) in a time of 2:14.44. Aweke Ayalew Yimer was second in 2:14.52 and Moses Kilmulwo Tuyange third in 2:15.10.
Dan Nash (Cardiff Athletics) was fourth in 2:18.32. Best of the local athletes was Eskander Turki Osman (Annadale Striders) who finished ninth in 2:22.22. Finishing 25th and first M60 was 64-year-old Tommy Hughes (Strive RC ) in 2:36.37. Hughes’ time of 2:30.02, run in October 2020, was a world M60 record.
First woman was Beatrice Jepkemai in 2:35.03; Laila Azia Alaoui Selsouli was a close second in 2:35.20 and Shewaye Woldemeskel third in 2:39.58. Gladys Ganiel (North Belfast Harriers, W45), winner in 2022 and second last year in 2:41.20, finished fourth woman this time in 2:40.21.
In the popular team relay which attracted well over a thousand teams, Lagan Valley’s mixed team (one woman!) came home first in 2:25.31, beating the club’s all-male team into second place in 2:36.04. BH Ladies were third in 2:45.56.
Marathon season in full swing
Winning the Limerick Marathon in 2:24.12 was Tudor Mircea Moldovan (Clonliffe Harriers). Alexander Wallace (St Coca’s AC) was second in 2:29.4 and Karl Fitzmaurice (Shannon AC) third in 2:29.20.
Yuliya Tarasova (Clonliffe Harriers, W35) was first woman in 2:55.46. Joan Flynn (Mullingar Harriers, W45) was second in 3:04.46 and Carol Bray (W35) third in 3:06.39.
Peter Somba (Dunboyne AC) won the half marathon in 68:26, with Sergiu Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers, M35) second in 68:46. First woman was Sally Forristal (St Joseph’s AC) in 82:19.
Aaron Hanlon made it a home win at the Drogheda 10km, in Co Louth on Sunday winning the race with a time of 31 mins 18 secs. A close second in 31:24 was Colin Maher (Ballyfin AC), while third in 32:05 was Vladislav Evseev.Fiona Roche (Raheny Shamrock , W40 ) was first woman in 36:34, followed by Laura McDonnell (Rathfarnham WSAF, W40) in 37:29 and Aoife Fay (Dunleer AC) in 39:43.
Leading home 1,373 finishers at the West of Ireland Women’s 10km Mini Marathon in Ballina, Co Mayo on Sunday (May 5) was Ellen Moran (Galway City Harriers) in 37:42. Sinead Whitelaw (Mullingar Harriers) was second in 38:47 and Serena Tuffy (Dundrum South Dublin AC0 third in 39:03. Both Whitelaw and Tuffy are originally from Ballina , Co Mayo.
Breffni Kelly (Clane AC, W35) was the winner of the women’s masters title at the Leinster Novice and Masters Road Championships, held in Gowran, Co Kilkenny on Saturday (May 4). Kelly clocked a time of 10 mins 45 secs for the 4km course. Michelle Cox (Newbridge AC, W40) was second in 11:01 and Catherine O’Connor ( Sli Cualann AC) third in 11:03.
Mick Fogarty (Ferbane AC, M45) won the men’s 6km race with a time of 19:24.Gavin Kelly (Clane AC, M45) was second in 19:35 and Mark Augustin (Le Chéile AC, M40) third in 19:47.
Novice title winners were Denise Egan (Ferbane AC) and Matthew Glennon (Mullingar Harriers).
Earlier in the week
At the ‘Deadman’s’ 5km, in Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary on Friday (May 3) Pat Fitzgerald (Waterford AC) was the winner in 16 mins 21 secs, with Kealy Tideswell (Clonmel AC, W40) third overall and first woman in 17:41 — her second win in as many days.
Michael Harty (East Cork AC, M40) in a time of 25 mins 30 secs and Kealey Tideswell (Clonmel AC, W40 ) in 28:58 were the winners at the Joe Hourigan Memorial 5 Mile in Midleton, Co Cork on Thursday (May 2).
Daniel Ryan Ellis (Nenagh Olympic AC) was the winner of the Brendan Kinane 5km held in Dundrum village, Co Tipperary on Wednesday (May 1). Dymphna Ryan of host club Dundrum AC was first woman in 17:04.

Track and field
As everyone probably knows by now, the Irish mixed and women’s 4 x 400m relay teams both won their heats at the World Relays in the Bahamas in national record times booking themselves places at the Paris Olympics.
Anything after that was gravy— and that included a third place finish for the the mixed team in the final. Making up the mixed team were Cillin Greene (Galway City Harriers), Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC), Thomas Barr (Ferrybank AC) and Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC). Adeleke and Mawdsley were also on the women’s 4x400m, along with Phil Healy (Bandon AC) and Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC).
Reserves Roisin Harrison (Emerald AC) and Lauren Cadden (Sligo AC), came in for Adeleke and Mawdsley in the women’s 4 x 400m final.

In the middle distances, at the first Dublin Graded Track and Field meet hosted by UCD at the Belfield track on Sunday (May 5), Conall Rogers (Raheny Shamrock AC ) was fastest in the men’s combined A/B 800m in 1:55.25. Winner of the combined women’s A and B 800 was Rachel Hosey (Emerald AC In 2:22.06. Second fastest was Cliodhna Nolan (Ace AC) while third was Molly Brown (Metro St Brigid’s AC) in 2:27.74.
Just six women turned out for the women’s 3000m, with Clare Sullivan (Crusaders AC ) the fastest in 10:41.64. Philip McKee (Letterkenny AC) won the men’s 3000m in 8:39.63.
The day had started out with the 2000m steeplechase with Dearbhla Allen and Abbie Sheridan, both St Peter’s AC, finishing first and second of five competitors in the women’s race in times of 7:13.82 and 7:17.32 respectively. In the men’s race, with an entry of four, Sean Lawton (Durrus AC) was the winner in 6:25.62.
Strong visiting athletes at Santry
Highlight of the Irish Milers Club/GV Ryan/Louis Vandendries Track and Field Meet held in Santry on Saturday (May 4) was a cracking men’s 800m with five athletes breaking 1 minute 47 seconds.
Polish visitor Filip Rak was the winner in 1:46.47 while behind him, Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers) and another Polish visitor Filip Ostowski were both given times of 1:456.75, with Doyle edging it for second place. Cillian Kiran (Raheny Shamrock) was fourth in 1:46.84 and Cian McPhillips (UCD AC) fifth in 1:47.40.
British visitor Alexandra Bell won the women’s 800m in 2:01.74. Best of the Irish was Jenna Bromell (Emerald AC) who was third in 2:02.75
Winners of the A grade men’s 1500m race was Lughaidh Mallon (Lagan Valley ) in 3:44.27. Emily Bolton (Donore Harriers) won the women’s A 1500m in 4:24.31.
Over 3000m, Oisin Murray (An Ríocht) won the men’s race in 8:14.73 with Rebecca Rossiter (CNDR Belfast) best of the women in 9:48.68.
