GB’s European medalists will race at the Great North City Games this weekend.
European 1500m champion Laura Muir, and Eilish McColgan, who won 5000m silver in Berlin, will turn to the roads and race over one mile at the Great North City Games on Saturday (September 8).
Muir has a one-mile road best of 4:18.4, which she ran at New York’s 5th Avenue Mile in 2016, while fellow Scot McColgan clocked 4:19.2 at the same event last year.
Both athletes impressed as they won medals in their respective events at the European Championships in August.
Muir followed up her golden moment in Berlin by winning the 1500m Diamond League final in Brussels last week.
“I’m really looking forward to competing over the mile at the Great North City Games,” said the 25 year-old. “I’ve raced at the City Games before but this will be the first time I’ll have ran in Stockton-on-Tees, so it’ll be something different.
“I love racing in new places, the competition is always fierce and it should be a great event.”
On Saturday their challengers include Muir’s training partner Jemma Reekie, Jess Judd, Katie Snowden, Rosie Clarke, Hannah England, Dutch athlete Susan Krumins and Sweden’s Anna Silvander.
In the men’s race, Moroccan Abdelaati Iguider leads the entries. The Olympic bronze medallist is set to face British athletes Zak Seddon, Robbie Fitzgibbon and Chris Parr, Australian Jordy Williamsz and Poland’s Matteus Borkowski.
GB’s Marc Scott, who has impressed recently on the roads with wins at the Mid-Chesire 5k and Trafford 10k, was set to compete, however, he has received a late call-up to the European team for the IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava.

This year the men’s and women’s mile events move from NewcastleGateshead to Stockton-on-Tees, racing over the iconic Infinity Bridge.
Meanwhile, Leon Reid, who has been sharing his running journey this year on Fast Running, will compete in the men’s 150m race. Among those the 200m Commonwealth bronze medalist is expected to face are Reece Prescod and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.
Elsewhere, Olympic, world and Commonwealth gold medalist Greg Rutherford will bring the curtain down on a glittering career in athletics with his final competitive appearance in the long jump on Newcastle Quayside.
