Sound Running sees PBs for GB distance stars

Gill Bland brings you the action from this weekend with plenty of PBs in the States and some quick domestic road races

California was the location for a fantastic evening of running at the Sound Running Track Meeting. The 5000m saw Sarah Inglis run a PB of 15:16.90, followed home by Jenny Nesbitt who also upgraded her best to 15:17.39. In the B race, Cari Hughes clocked 16:18.30. For the men, Patrick Dever and Josh Kerr were in action, with the former running one second shy of a PB but still a European QT, finishing ninth in 13:20.59. Kerr was 20th in 13:37.99.

Stephen Scullion race the 10,000m, finishing in 28:42.76. Earlier in the evening Neil Gourley won the men’s 1500m in 3:38.11 and Jake Heyward was third in 3:38.55. Jamaine Coleman was in the B race and still ran a seven-second PB of 3:39.37. In the women’s 1500m, Katie Snowden ran 4:03.90 to place third in a time which qualifies her for the World Champs, while Adelle Tracey bagged a European QT to place fifth in a PB of 4:05.52. In the B  race, Georgie Hartigan was second in 4:10.7 and Holly Archer eighth in 4:16.29. Over 800m, Kyle Langford was third in 1:47.49 and Ellie Baker ran 2:02.20.

Over in Toyko, the Seiko Golden Grand Prix saw Guy Learmouth in action over 800m, running 1:47.51. Aimee Pratt of Sale Harriers won the 5000m race at the Meeting Desafio Nerja  in Spain, running a time of 15:30.72.

Elsewhere on the global stage, Erick Kiptanui of Kenya ran a 1:00:05 debut to win Lisbon Half Marathon against strong winds.  Etagegn Woldu (ETH) ran 1:11:27 to clock a three minute PB for the women’s win. Norbert Kigen of Kenya took the victory at the Prague Marathon. Conditions were reportedly very warm, so he was a way off his previous best, but won in 2:07:54. However, the heat didn’t stop the women’s winner – Bekelech Gudeta Borecha of Ethiopia who took a minute off her previous best to break the tape in 2:22:56. We are awaiting the results of GB runners.

Scottish 5km Champs

The Sri Chinmoy 5k which was also the Tru Wealth Scottish 5k Champs saw thrilling fight for fast times and a top 20 all under 15 minutes. Jonny Glen won in 14:26, narrowly beating a photo finish for runner up, in the form of Christian Graham and Alastair Hay – both of whom ran 14:28. The women’s race had a little more daylight between podium places as Annabel Simpson took gold in 16:28, followed by Sarah Calvert in 16:43 and Naomi Lang in 16:49.

Track & back on the roads

On the track, the Tonbridge AC Evening Meet, wins over 3000m went to Michael Ellis in 8:37.89 and Madeleine Barker in 10:28.03. The Trafford Grand Prix  saw countless previous bests fall. One of those belonged to Daniel Bebbington, who won the 3000m in 8:19.31, while a season’s best for Lauren Heyes made her fastest woman in 9:07.12. At the Watford Open Graded Meeting Jack Goodwin of Bedford and County ran 8:20.26 and Pippa Roessler set a new PB of 9:23.06 to be fastest woman over 3000m.

Saturday’s Sunderland City 5k had a fast field, headed up by Carl Avery (Morpeth Harriers) 14:25, Tommy Power (Hallamshire Harriers) 14:26 and Jamie Hall 14:28 (Hallamshire Harriers).  Danielle Hodgkinson (Wallsend Harriers) 16:02, Phillipa Stone (Middlesborough) 16:10 and Gemma Hillier-Moses Charnwood AC 16:42 held the women’s medal positions.

The Sunday 10k podium places belonged to Liam Aldridge 31:18, Liam Taylor 31:52 and Stephen Jackson 32:20. Gold spot in the women’s race was taken by a familiar name – Aly Dixon – in 35:44. Following her home was Imogen Bungay in 37:35 and Robyn Naylor in 40:46.

The PB 5k in Ardingly saw two U20 gents dip under 15 minutes, with Hamish Reilly taking the win in 14:35 and Raif Serif second in 14:42. Sam Wade was third in 15:02. The women’s race was a swift one too – Verity Hopkins was first to the finish in 16:35 and therefore claims gold, though on chip time Maddie Jordan-Lee ran a second faster but was not first over the line. 16:50 earned Katie Bingle third place.

At Helensburgh 10k Sonia Samuels showed fine form, winning in 34:30, ahead of Carlene Burleigh (37:08) and Katie White (37:55). Sol Sweeney was the men’s winner, running a fantastic 30:00 flat. Weyney Ghebreselassie was next in 30:57 and Matthew Turner third in 33:08.  Dean Williamson set a new course record of 30:42 to top the podium at the Colchester 10k full results will be added here soon. Alex Miell-Ingram led the charge home at the Oxford Town & Gown 10k  crossing the line in 31:40 with Emma Hodson’s 35:38 earning her a 1st class finish.

Run Gatwick winners were as follows: Half Marathon – Neil Boniface 71:06 and Helen Gaunt 80:58, 10k – Ayoub Saji 32:33 and Imogen Amos 36:09, 5k – Ben Short 15:53 and 18:05. At the Leeds Half Marathon Joe Sagar took a clear win in 68:07, beating Jack Kelly’s 71:27. Faye Kirkby topped the women’s rankings in 83:48. Ranelagh Richmond Half Marathon saw Ben Goddard take victory for Woking AC in 71:17 and 85:45 for Cecilia Sirrufo for Guildford and Godalming.

Harwich 5k was won by Sam Clayton with a time of 15:30.4 and Katie King who clocked 18:18.7. Hereford Couriers 5k victories went to Charlie Jones in 15:17 and Donna Morris in17:35. Over 5k at the Bedgebury Pinetum Summer Series Matt Britton was first home in 18:55 and Amy Seager 20:15. In the 10k race is was 10k Fraser Irving in 19:48 and Lucy Martlew in 44:19. Reece Ashfield (32:19)and Millie Smith (39:08) took the wins at the Dudley Kingswinford 10k. Benromach 10K was won by Adam Baker in 31:15 and Kirstie Rogan in 39:17

Top runner at the Great Yarmouth Promenade 5 mile race went to  James Reed (Cambridge and Coleridge) in 25:41 and Lacey Bareham (City of Norwich) in 30:13.

In RunThrough racing, there were a few on offer this week. The Chase the Sun Olympic Park 5 was won by Jacob Plummer (16:36) and Abigail Cardwell (19:25) while the 10k went to  George Suthon in 32:58 and Lizzie Broughton in 39:49. At the Tatton 10k Matthew Cooper won in 34:47 and Louise Blizzard in 42:35. In Victoria Park a half marathon race saw Andrew Risk victorious in 73:40 – nearly seven minutes clear of the rest of the field. Francesca Stocco took the women’s win in 89:36. Over 10k Scott Burrel (34:27) and Imogen Mackie (39:51) went home as top runners and in the 5k Nina Griffth won overall in 17:26 beating first male Thomas O’Brien who ran 17:58.The Exeter 10K River Run also had a female overall winner, as Charlie Arnell raced home in 36:28, putting her ahead of Don Rufus who was the first gent in 38:05. Ronnie Richmond clocked 31:49 to top the podium at the Bideford 10k alongside Sammy Antell with 36:33. Jamie Barnett won the Ivybridge 10k  in 32:43 and Lauren Knox first lady in 42:25

Ultra Awesomeness

In Ultra-world, the Pennine Barrier 50 was won by Rob Payne in 07:58:49 and Jess Gray in 09:37:54. Tristan Stephenson won the Centurion Thames Path 100  in 13:59:38 and Zoe Murphy had a storming day out, finishing third overall and first woman in 16:16:50.
